Playing with Buckets

Anything galvanized is at the top of my focus list when I'm out treasure hunting, but there's something about the old buckets I can't resist.  Sometimes I come across a load of them all at one sale, and sometimes I find them one by one over the course of a few months.

Last week I posted about this poultry fount (aka chicken waterer) that I found at a barn sale.  It was looking mighty dirty and in need of some TLC when I brought it home.

Each piece was dressed up with a stencil I made using the Modern No. 20 font on my
 Silhouette Cameo.

I used black acrylic paint for the stencil, then sprayed both pieces with a coat of clear matte sealer.

No. 2 slips right over No. 1 and locks in place to control the flow of water into the pan.  Now that it's retired from watering chickens, it has a simpler life just being decorative as two separate pieces.

I found this little wooden bucket/firkin in an antique mall last summer, but I didn't know what I wanted to do with it until I saw what Sandi at A Cottage Muse did with hers.  A couple layers of chalk paint and a chocolate inspired label from The Graphics Fairy gave it a new life.  Thanks for the inspiration Sandi.

Another label from The Graphics Fairy dressed up this little bucket in about five minutes.  Click here for a quick and easy way to dress up galvanized buckets.

These are just fantastic! I love galvanized anything. I have chickens with a new galvanized feeder, but I'll be on the lookout for old ones!

I'd love it if you linked this to my new linky party, "What We've Accomplished Wednesdays."

Have a great weekend!

Your stenciling is flawless and looks like it's been there all along.

Poultry fount! I too have been calling these 'chicken waterers' so now I can use the proper term and act like I know what I'm talking about.
Ditto for 'firkin'. ;-)

Hi Betsy,
The stenciling is REALLY nice. I love how big you made the numbers. You are really gutsy when it comes to altering old things. I hesitate, thinking, oh I should just leave it in its original state. But when you add your 'new' (that look like they've always been there) touches, it just makes them so special and unique. The cool font on the chicken thingees is the bomb!

Quick and easy adds so much here. The stencils, and the labels are a great addition. I have a passion for all things galvanized too.

so cute!! Yes, the chicken waterer is pretty rusty now....I had succulents in it last year, and it gave the base lots of "patina"! ha ha! love what you did with these. Thanks for your visit and sweet comments!!!

Love the way you've personalized those galvanized chicken feeders. I think that's something I could maybe do on my French enamal-ware. Thanks for sharing great ideas.

Love the painted numbers and graphics from the Graphic Fairy. They all look great! I have an old galvanized coal bucket. I think the numbers would look good on it. I should do something with it!! It's been in the garage!! Story of my life! I wish I had your energy and motivation!

The graphics contributed in intensifying that vintage look. Your pieces could even make it as center pieces to a French inspired or Old English party :)

That wood painted bucket with the label has such a soft and sweet look to it, but I love the galvanized metal too. You can make anything dramatically decorative. Nicely done as always!

I have a collection of firkins throughout my house. I got brave and painted three of them for my guest bedroom in varying shades of gray for an ombre effect. I may just have to slap a label on one or two of them for that beautiful "Frenchy" look. I don't have much galvanized in my house, but I love the look. What a great idea to add a number!

I have got to find some old buckets!! I get so envious every time you show one. I just love them grouped together with the plants. And I love the difference that stencil makes on that chicken waterer.
